Brand Influence

January 17, 2021 Essay

Why are we things driven society? Why do we value our things so much? I think it’s partly evolution’s fault since better tools meant a higher rate of survival. People who were close to someone with a weapon had a higher chance of survival. In today’s society, that instinct works against us.

I don’t understand why do people care so much about brands. Can you tell me any good reason to defend a product designed by a big corporation and (probably) made with child labor or unfairly treated workers in underdeveloped countries? Why are you such a big fan of a brand that probably exploited their workers or users to get a large portion of the market share? Do you think they care about you?

I think that our society became a status-driven competition. That’s also the reason why the advertising business is doing so well. I’m afraid that this status driven society got a huge boost with the help of social media.

In just a few taps, you can now compare your life with someone else’s. You can now compare your apartment, bike, chair, view, experience, friends, and more with just a scroll on your favorite social media platform. All of this is collectively making us sad. As far as I understand, the real reason why social media is so bad is mostly due to the comparison factor, and this is especially amplified in our teenage years.

Why does it matter what kind of car do you drive? We put money as a primary factor of success. I have so many questions. Since when did we decide that things are worth more than people. Why don’t we judge a certain job based on the payout?

I’m far from perfect, but I’m trying. I’m trying to judge a person based on their character, but maybe I shouldn’t be judging at all. Maybe the problem starts with me.
